- Many cultures developed the ability to manufacture paints and dyes by using raw materials found in nature. Copper was the most commonly used material to produce the color blue. When copper begins to oxidize the metal, it often takes on a brilliant blue color. The copper oxide was mixed into a base which in turn was used to color fabric, tents, pottery and many other things.
